Walmer Peace Gardens

Walmer Peace Gardens is a tranquil green space, a haven for British flora and fauna to survive. As you walk to the end of York and Albany Close you will catch a glimpse of the gate leading to a beautiful meadow, garden areas, three mature trees (a majestic Copper Beech, and two Planes), and a mini orchard. Winding pathways lead you through the space encouraging you to explore.

A dedicated committee/team of volunteers look after and maintain the land, along with Walmer in Bloom – Walmer Town Council. Our aim is to encourage local residents and community groups to visit for quiet time in nature, and for leisure.

We would like to keep its natural character. The grassland is mown once a year in the autumn to allow moths, butterflies, bees and other invertebrates to feed and lay their eggs. Native (Kent/British) wildflowers are encouraged to spread that would have been found in old meadows. We let nature and wildlife flourish with as little interference as possible.

Small garden areas are managed by local residents and children to encourage pollinators and inspire a love of all things growing.

We encourage everyone to look around and enjoy the wildlife. The appearance of WPG changes dramatically throughout the seasons. You will find pockets of colour even in winter…but of course it all comes alive with a cacophony of meadow flowers alongside blousy hollyhocks and foxglove spires in summer. Look out for the wild carrot (Queen Anne’s Lace) – loved by the carder bees!

This is a hidden gem, a community space with biodiversity and conservation at the heart of what we wish to achieve.

In March 2024, the WPG was awarded a Golden Orchard to mark The Tree Council’s 50th anniversary. The special fruit saplings - Julia’s Late Golden (apple), Paradice Gold (apple), Golden Glow (apricot), Oullins gage (plum) and Malus Golden Hornet (crab apple) - are now happily established and producing fruits.

The grassed area and pathways are mown regularly to help with wheelchair and buggy/pushchair access.

Dogs on leads are welcome.

We warmly welcome volunteers. General maintenance, haymaking, mowing, collecting seeds and monitoring wildlife and wildflowers are some of the activities you may like to get involved in. It’s a great way to get to know our neighbours, build a community, feel the benefits of being outdoors… and enjoy some homemade biscuits and laughs along the way!
