An area of derelict land behind the council held allotments in Campbell Road, Walmer, Stoney Path consists of unclaimed land stretching from North Barrack Road to Trafalgar Drive. Originally part of a pathway out of the main town, the site would later come under military command with a brickworks built there in the 19th century.
The area that is now the allotments then called the ‘brickfield’ was carved out to gain access to the clay deposits underneath. This clay was used to form bricks and tiles for the use of the war office to build Deal Barracks nearby, with the completion of the military facilities completed it is believed that the brickworks was decommissioned and torn down. The rights to the land that made up the allotments were then handed over to the then- Urban District Council of Walmer in 1893
Not much more is known about the history of the location until the 1970s, at this point twenty allotment places existed within Campbell Road, at some point the upper section that comprised of Stoney Path was also fenced off with iron railings. A later building development would wall off one end of area. Little was done with the area until the establishment of Walmer Parish Council in 1996 when the allotments came under Walmer Council control. Since then, the growth in the area has been kept under control with occasional cutting and maintenance, a fence with a locked gate was installed around 2017.
The current plan is to turn Stoney Path into a Public Orchard, installing several types of tree including both fruit growing and non-fruit growing varieties. Grass and wildflowers will be encouraged to grow to improve the soil as well as keep intrusive species of flora at bay, once complete these additions should improve the biodiversity both in flowers and plants but also for local wildlife, especially invertebrates and pollinators
Currently the overgrowth is being trimmed back regularly to allow for new, fresh grass to being taking hold to replace it. Once the grass is in place, it and the overgrowth will continue to be tended to while other decisions are made as to what will be done with it.
